A Mickey Mouse Museum

September 24, 2009 | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack

Few people have had as big an impact on America’s entertainment industry as did Walt Disney.  Whether you remember the original Mickey Mouse Club or his amazing animated movies like Bambi and Fantasia, Walt Disney was a true giant.

With the opening of the Walt Disney Family Museum on October 1, 2009, visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area will have a rare opportunity to see a unique side of this wonderful American icon.  Fortunately, loyal Extended Stay Hotels customers can stay at the Extended Stay Deluxe San Rafael - Francisco Boulevard East hotel and be just a half hour’s drive from the new Disney Museum.

If you plan to visit the Disney Museum, be sure to review the directions provided on the organization’s website.  Pay special attention to the fact that while the address is 104 Montgomery Street, the Museum is NOT located in San Francisco’s famous Financial District.  It is actually located on the Presidio of San Francisco, just minutes from Golden Gate Bridge.

At the time of this writing, the Museum website is still in development, but it is clear that included among the exhibits will be some of the original artwork from the earliest and most famous of the Walt Disney shows and movies.

For those with an interest in a specific Disney movie, be sure to review the Public Programs page for the dates and times of movie screenings, music concerts, book signings and any other special event.

When considering your trip, you should also be aware that tickets are sold on a timed-entry basis, and according to the Museum website, it is advisable to purchase tickets in advance.  You should also keep in mind that the Museum is closed every Tuesday and on most major holidays.

The trip from your room at Extended Stay Deluxe San Rafael to the Disney Museum takes you through what is called by some “Marvelous Marin,” one of California’s most beautiful areas.  You then proceed over the world famous Golden Gate Bridge.  This is one of those circumstances where the trip is almost as interesting as the destination, so be sure to have cameras ready for some amazing scenery along the way.

Eat, Drink and Be Healthy

Eating healthy food while traveling is one of the biggest challenges many road warriors face.  It is just too easy to grab a doughnut for breakfast or succumb to the draw of the steak house down the road.  So what is a health-conscious traveler to do?

Stay at one of the nearly 700 Extended Stay Hotels locations and enjoy the convenience of a kitchen in every room.  No one should feel ill at ease in a kitchen, so here are some ideas for easy and mostly healthy alternatives to fast food and over-sized dinners.

Breakfast items should include cereal, milk, fresh fruit, a small egg substitute, bagels or English muffins and fruit jam.  For dinners, buy a small package of chicken breasts, olive oil, a small jar of pasta sauce, Italian cheese, pasta, and a firm white fish filet, like tilapia.  Some fresh vegetables to steam are also a good idea.   From home, bring a little flour, bread crumbs and coffee.

The breakfast items are pretty straightforward, but some actually do double duty.  For example, your breakfast bagel or muffin, once toasted and topped with pasta sauce and cheese, is a great snack or light dinner.  Buy some vanilla ice cream and use some of the fresh fruit and breakfast fruit jam as a topping to create a yummy sundae.

Dinners can be a little more complicated but are well worth it.  Your fish or chicken can be lightly floured and pan fried in olive oil.  If you prefer a crust, drag the meat in flour and egg substitute followed by bread crumbs.  This, plus a nice steamed vegetable courtesy of your microwave, has you eating a delicious and healthy meal.

Top leftover chicken with pasta sauce and grated cheese, add a side of pasta or vegetables, and you have another healthy dinner with almost no work.   For delicious, but slightly more time-intensive chicken and pasta dinners, visit About.com for suggestions.  Road Warrior is especially fond of the Chicken Stir-Fried Ramen and the Chicken and Sun-Dried Tomatoes.

Sometimes you want a light dinner that won’t put you to sleep.  A garden omelet and salad might be just the thing.   You already have the egg substitute, so just bring a small bag of herbs from home and pick up your favorite salad items on your way back to your room.

After your big day, whether sightseeing or working, don’t feel like you have to head out to a restaurant for dinner.  Stay with Extended Stay Hotels and whip up a great meal in the comfort of your very own room.

Fall Garden Tours

September 8, 2009 | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack

The newspaper travel sections are already pushing fall sightseeing.  While this typically means golden and red trees, one USA Today article took a different direction - private gardens.

While gardens alone may not stir Road Warrior’s interest, the cities in which the gardens reside, Charleston, South Carolina and the Rhode Island Coast, are fun places to visit.  Even better, there are several comfortable, exceptionally priced Extend Stay Hotels properties within striking distance of both locales.

Long the summer home for America’s Northeastern aristocracy, Newport, Rhode Island, has about as many mansions per square mile as you are to find anywhere else.  Not surprisingly, these luxury estates have magnificent gardens that are wonderful to tour.  The Fall edition of the Secret Garden Tour runs September 11 – 13, 2009.  Whether you are touring gardens or mansions, you are sure to find affordable accommodations in one of the four Providence, Rhode Island, Extended Stay Hotels locations

Also mentioned in the USA Today article is Charleston, South Carolina’s annual Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens, held from September 24 through October 25, 2009.  Beyond its beautiful gardens, Charleston is full of historical significance, having been the fifth largest city in North America in the late 1600s.  If you are more interested in modern marvels, Charleston is home to the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the Americas.

In addition to hosting spectacular homes and gardens, Charleston features numerous seasonal attractions through the fall.  The Charleston Visitors Bureau calendar for September and October of 2009 is packed with exciting recreational opportunities in the area.

If you like to go to parties just to sample the food, you may want to visit during the Taste of Charleston, an event showcasing Lowcountry cuisine.  If Blues and barbecue is more your style, take a memorable cruise on Charleston Harbor.  If you’re one of those runners we all marvel at, come during the Daisy Dash, a 5k race sponsored by United Healthcare.

No matter if you visit for a garden tour or lip-smacking barbecue, your visit to this jewel of the American South will be comfortable and affordable if you choose one of the four great Extended Stay Hotels locations in Charleston

Travel Bargains Abound

Regular Road Warrior readers know that Christopher Elliot is a favorite travel blogger.  Chris recently interviewed noted travel psychologist Michael Brein, asking him about a survey on travel deals recently conducted by a company called Access America.

The survey asked people whether this was a good time to find great travel deals.  By a substantial margin, respondents thought that low fares and other travel bargains are readily available.  Given the huge promotions currently running on ExtendedStayHotels.com, Road Warrior heartily agrees.

Adventurers in search of great travel value need look no further than the last-minute week-end bargains offered under the Extended Stay Hotels’ Suite Savings program.  Unlike some discount programs, Suite Savings isn’t just for out of the way places or available only during the off season.

To prove this point, Road Warrior looked up specials for Labor Day Weekend at the Extended Stay America Oakland - Alameda hotel near San Francisco, California.  The savings on a room amounted to an amazing 20% discount...  That is truly sweet!

Visitors will be ecstatic about more than the price, given the hotel’s great location.  You are right on the inner harbor, about five minutes from Jack London Square, a place known for culture, cuisine and commerce on the Oakland waterfront.  Filled with great restaurants, fun shops and interesting museums, you might be tempted to spend your entire weekend here - but don’t.  There is much more to see and do.

If you want to spend a few hours in San Francisco, but don’t want to deal with navigating and parking a car, you are in luck.  The Lake Merritt Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station is less than two miles from your hotel.  Once on BART, you can access many of the fun and exciting attractions around the San Francisco Bay Area.

This is just one of the great opportunities available through Suite Savings.  With nearly 700 hotels across the Unites States and in Canada, you are sure to find a fun and affordable place to spend your next week-end.
