Quick Tip For Airline Travel
March 30, 2009 | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack
Most travelers we know avoid checking luggage whenever possible. Unfortunately, the operative word here is “possible.” Sometimes, due to limited overhead space or some other reason, a bag that you planned to take with you on the plane ends up getting checked with the other luggage. This can be a problem if you packed assuming the bag would remain safely with you.
Road Warrior suggests that when you pack a carry-on bag, put those special items, like small electronics, prescription drugs and jewelry, in a separate plastic bag. Place this bag in an exterior pocket of your suitcase. If you are forced to check the suitcase, just pull out the plastic bag and send your luggage to the cargo hold.

Luggage Losses and Damage

The old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Road Warrior heartily agrees. This idea certainly applies to protecting the contents of your checked luggage.
Should airline baggage handlers leave your luggage outdoors in the rain, your clothing is likely to get soaked. You can protect your belongings by creating an interior lining using a large plastic garbage bag. Place the bag in your suitcase, pack in the bag and close it when done. You can even use this as a laundry bag during your stay.
Dealing with lost luggage is another gigantic pain in the neck. The first thing you are asked for is a list of what was in the suitcase. As you pack, use your cell phone camera to photograph the contents. That way you not only can make a complete list, you can justify your loss on the spot.
If your final destination is an Extended Stay Hotels(sm) location, then lighten your luggage load. Since every hotel has an on-site guest laundry facility, you won't need to pack your entire wardrobe.

Tools for Travel

Dealing with repairs while traveling is all about having the right tools and materials. Many experienced road warriors have their special tool kits they wouldn’t be without.
Most good travel repair kits include a simple repair kit for glasses that has small screws and screwdriver. If you do need to make repairs to your eye glasses, then having a magnifier glass so you can see what you are doing is a must. For all sorts of general repair, carry a multi-function tool with screwdrivers, scissors, pliers, etc. Since most of these have a knife blade, be sure it is packed in your checked luggage.
A sticky zipper on luggage or clothing can ruin a trip. If you rub some candle wax or lip balm on the zipper teeth, however, they will move much easier. Whether on trousers or a skirt, a torn hem can be unsightly and dangerous. A small roll of double sided tape is all you need to make the repair that will get you home safe and sound.
Many of these items can be found at a nearby store, so don’t hesitate to ask the staff at your Extended Stay Hotels location for directions. They are always happy to help.
The Spring Car Migration

The word “migration” makes most people think of birds or buffalo. There is actually a migration of sorts for rental cars that spent their winter in places like Florida. This migration is more about relocating inventory than natural cycles, and depending on your travel plans, it could save you a lot of money.
Between April and June, some rental car companies bring inventory north. Rather than pay for shipping, great deals are offered to travelers looking for one-way rentals. If you plan business in Florida, for example, and have the time to drive back home, you can save a lot of money. Some rental car companies offer one-way weekly rates as low as $10 for their smallest cars and big discounts on minivans and SUVs as well.
You will want to jump on this right away, however, since some of the companies require that booking be complete by the end of March.

Recycling for Travelers

Road Warrior always looks for ways to recycle things he might otherwise throw away. Here are some tips to combine your recycling with your traveling.
Travelers who pack small bottles of soap or shampoo will want to prevent leaks by first cutting small squares from plastic grocery bags. Unscrew the bottle tops, place a square over the bottle top and replace the cap. Take some extra squares with you for protection during the trip home.
If your morning newspaper is delivered in one of those long plastic bags, save a few and use them for packing shoes. This keeps shoes polished and street dirt away from your clean clothing.
Some household items, like bed sheets, come in zippered packages made of heavy-duty clear plastic. Think twice before you throw these away as they are great for packing everything from toiletries to damp swimwear.
