Mail Bag Post #1
Elana Asks:
I am a female geek who dreams of getting a travel job someday, either troubleshooting some cool technology on behalf of a good company or being able to present the cool technology somehow to the public using my graphics skills.
I know nothing of companies who would want such a thing.
I figure that the best place to start my research would be some net-community where people who are "road warriors"... a net-place where they talk, hang out, trade stories of their business travels, share travel tips, etc. Maybe a place like that could be where I can ask how to start my research.
Do you know of any such net-forum, bulletin board, etc. where people who do a lot of business travel hang out and talk?
A good question.
When we were starting up this blog, we looked for other enclaves of road warriors online to reach out to, get advice from, and include in future discussions on this website. Unfortunately, we were not able to locate many groups... leading us to believe that there was even more of a need for our site than we suspected. There are lots of travel forums, but not many that focus specifically on business travel. However, we have found a few sites along the way which may help you in your quest. We hope you find them useful.
A New York Times article that talks about business travel bloggers
About.com's business travel forum; not incredibly active, but does have some interesting information
Forbes business community forum with a section on travel
Flyer Talk Forum with some business travel topics discussed
Travel e-Blackboard has some discussions going on business travel
And perhaps the other road warriors who visit this site have more ideas. Good luck!

Travel Coaching

Have you been traveling a while? If you consider yourself a road warrior and ever want to quit your day job, there may be another career opportunity awaiting that you never thought of.
The New York Times has an article in today's paper called "Skilled Traveler? Good Coach." It has this to say:
Ms. Haley wanted to know how to make business trips less stressful and more enjoyable. Ms. Randall, who calls herself a "life acceleration coach," offered her a number of tips to make travel easier.
She urged her, for example, to use the Internet more for ticketing to avoid long lines at the airport. And she told Ms. Haley to join airline clubs, so that she would have a more restful place to wait if her flight were canceled or delayed. Ms. Haley said she once thought the clubs were a waste of money but found that "this could be a time when you plan out the week, so it's not all haphazard when you're getting there."
More business travelers appear to be catching the coaching bug.
The world keeps getting smaller and people have business all over. Some of this can be done over phone and email but a lot of it cannot, causing lots of business people to board planes for meetings, presentations, and workshops. With busy schedules and hectic trips, this can be very stressful and many of these travelers are seeking outside help. Others who have been in the same situation and have picked up tips, tricks, and sound advice to make travel easier are in the best position to advise this new crop of jet-setters. They are life coaches who specialize in streamlining business travel.
This new career path can be a very lucrative one, with the New York Times article noting salaries anywhere from $500 a month for over the phone coaching to $3500 a day for going with a client as they travel. And depending on expertise and one-on-one coaching time, contracts can be anything in between. It can also be very rewarding since on a daily basis you are helping people bring some order and peace back into their lives.
I just thought I'd share with all you road warriors out there.
