Gift Ideas for the Traveling Shopper
June 28, 2005 | Permalink | Comments (0)
When the only stores you seem to see are borderline tacky souvenir shops in hotel lobbies, finding gifts to bring home for loved ones for birthdays can be difficult. Still harder is coming up with wedding presents which can be a frequent task at this time of year. Shopping time is limited when you're on the road and even what time you do have is dicey because you may not know the area well enough to know where to go shopping.
The good news with wedding presents is that most registries are now available online. So you can get what they want and have it waiting for you even if you won't be around in the time leading up to the important day. This is especially helpful while at an extended stay property where there is wireless Internet access. Getting the right present can be a mouse click away and it can even arrive already gift wrapped. What did people do before online shopping?
For other, less specific presents, there may be other choices that are so often overlooked while in a hurried travel schedule. Ask around and see what the area is known for. You never know what might be perfect gift. By picking something up from the places you go, you can be sure the recipient won't get a duplicate gift and it shows that you were thinking of them while on the road. Ask people working at the hotel where you're staying, they shop for presents too and have had far more time to get to know the area. And always keep an eye out for shops a little off the beaten path. It's finding the hidden gem that can make travel so satisfying.
Packing Tips

The second step in luggage is packing for trips. But you already know that. You go on business trips and take your life in your bag already. How efficiently do you pack? Instituting a few small packing adjustments can make all the difference between checking and carrying on your luggage next trip. Small things fit well into corners and also into the space around the retracting handle. Shoes, always kept to a bare minimum, may benefit from being packed in bags to keep them apart from the clothes and within easy reach. You don't want to be digging around your suitcase trying to find the other shoe when you're trying to make it to a meeting on-time. And make sure your have all your electronics, wires and cables. You can get by with one fewer shirt than you had planned, but one less wire can be more of an issue.
There are plenty of guides out there for choosing luggage and packing for the business trip, but the main idea is to keep it simple. Bring only what you need and consider what that is before you start packing. Taking what you need in what you can transport easily will help you get to your destinations more prepared, making you more relaxed and ready.
Carry-On Luggage

Business travelers know the pains of continually checking luggage and understand the necessity of packing light. This can become difficult for longer trips where multiple suits and many pieces of electronics are needed to conduct business as usual. This is where useful luggage comes in handy. What is the ideal luggage to keep road warriors moving? And what do you put in it?
So does what you pack in make a difference? That depends. But clothes generally come out less wrinkled when in a well-designed hanging bag. And it's all about ease of use, whether this pertains to how the handle feels, the responsiveness of the wheels, or the ability of the suitcase to fit easily into overhead compartments. This does not mean that the top of the line bag is always necessary, but a good quality bag that can face the road with you is vital. Find out what works for you.
Some useful tips:
Wireless Internet Access at Hotels
June 15, 2005 | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack
So you've arrived at another hotel and turn on your laptop only to later trudge, disappointed, down to the small "business center" with a few computers on the Internet. An expanding number of hotels are have Internet access in the room but more than a few have yet to catch up. Yet others have high-speed wireless Internet access. With a Wi-Fi connection, you have the ability to do work without the hassle of hooking up your computer and finding the right connection settings. You can turn on your computer and get online easily and quickly. The problem is that these kinds of capabilities are only available at the most expensive of hotels, right?
Surprisingly, wireless access does not always have to come with a hefty price tag at a top-of-the-line hotel. Extended Stay Hotels realizes that fast Internet access is essential to guests traveling for business and therefore offers wireless Internet in all their suites, all the time. This is certainly a step up from budget hotels, yet still at a great price. In addition to getting a very comfortable suite, you will have enough space to surf the web from wherever you want and not be tied to the desk. No uncertainty, no obstacles, just easy access that allows you to be more productive and have a more enjoyable stay.
So when you are looking for a hotel while on the road, look for places that offer wireless access. It will save you time and keep you from frustration, allowing you to work and relax online right in your own room. Just because you are on a budget does not mean you should forgo important conveniences. And while you're looking, be sure to keep your eye out for nearby Extended Stay Hotels to keep you connected.

Traveling During Hurricane Season

Welcome to hurricane season 2005. How active will it be and how will this affect you? The WRC and NOAA have weighed in on the 2005 hurricane season and are in agreement, predicting four major hurricanes to make landfall on the US coastline this year. Since 1995, there has been an increase in tropical storm activity in the Atlantic basin and this year is no exception with a predicted 15 named tropical storms and 8 hurricanes forming between June and November. There will also be around 80 storm days resulting form this active hurricane season according to these recent predictions.
We'll soon meet Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Dennis and Emily to name a few of the upcoming storms. According to the TMP, there is a 77 percent chance that one of the four major (category 3 or above) hurricanes will make landfall along the US coastline. So where will these massive storm systems go? The East Coast is the most likely victim of hurricane season 2005 with a 59 percent chance of seeing a major hurricane and the coastal area between Florida and Texas is a close second with a 44 percent chance. All these statistics are up considerably from the average numbers of the last century.
So how does this affect your travel? If this year is anything like last year, these hurricanes can play havoc on the areas that are affected. Stay alert and informed on approaching hurricanes and weather developments in the region with the NOAA.
And here are more resources for information, predictions and safety precautions for the 2005 storm season:
One way to minimize the danger of even the strongest hurricanes is to stay at a hotel above sea level and at least 15 miles inland. So you can grab some sun, but stay at cities that are away from the water. This way you can make the shore a day trip but your vacation won't be ruined on account of an incoming hurricane.
Here are great hotels in fun locations inland from hurricane-prone areas, but still within reach of the beach:
